Australia’s prominent all-rounder, Glenn Maxwell, is currently in a race against time as he contends with a recent injury, just a month before the ICC ODI World Cup. Maxwell sustained an ankle injury during a training session in Durban while preparing for Australia’s T20I series against South Africa. He is set to return home to support his wife as they anticipate the birth of their first child.

Though Maxwell’s recovery from the ankle injury is anticipated, national selector Tony Dodemaide is cautious due to Maxwell’s history of injuries, which includes a peculiar leg injury from a party last year. Despite this, Dodemaide maintains optimism that Maxwell will regain fitness for Australia’s ODI series against India ahead of the World Cup.

Dodemaide conveyed, “We will monitor Glenn’s recovery with a view to him being available for the three-match ODI series in India in advance of the World Cup.”

Maxwell, known for his multifaceted skills, boasts an impressive ODI record, encompassing 128 matches, 3490 runs scored at an average of 33.88, and a strike rate of 124.82. He has also taken 60 wickets with an economy rate of 5.56.

Maxwell’s injury has paved the way for Matthew Wade’s return to the T20I squad for the series against South Africa. Wade could also serve as an extra wicket-keeping option alongside Josh Inglis.

Aside from Maxwell, various other pivotal players are absent from Australia’s T20I squad due to diverse reasons. Steve Smith, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Cameron Green, and David Warner are among those on the sidelines.

The Australia T20 squad, scheduled to face South Africa, comprises: Mitchell Marsh (c), Sean Abbott, Tim David, Ben Dwarshuis, Nathan Ellis, Aaron Hardie, Travis Head, Josh Inglis, Spencer Johnson, Matt Short, Marcus Stoinis, Ashton Turner, Matthew Wade, and Adam Zampa.
