The Asian Games 2023, also known as Hangzhou 2023, is the 19th edition of the continental multi-sport event that is being held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8, 2023. The Asian Games officially get underway with the opening ceremony on September 23. However, cricket, football, volleyball and beach volleyball will start from September 19.

The Asian Games 2023 features 56 venues and 481 gold medals across 40 sports. The sports include traditional Olympic disciplines such as athletics, swimming, gymnastics and cycling, as well as Asian-specific sports such as kabaddi, sepaktakraw and wushu.

The Asian Games 2023 also introduces some new sports such as breakdancing, esports, skateboarding and sport climbing, which are part of the Olympic program for Paris 2024.

The Asian Games 2023 is expected to attract more than 10,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions in Asia. The event is being held under the slogan “Heart to Heart, @Future”, which reflects the vision of Hangzhou as a smart city that embraces innovation and inclusiveness.

Highlights

  • China dominates the swimming events, winning 15 gold medals out of 41. Zhang Yufei breaks the world record in the women’s 100m butterfly with a time of 55.62 seconds.
