Ryder Cup 2023: Team Europe vs Team USA Schedule, Results, and Highlights

The Ryder Cup is golf’s most prestigious team event, biennially bringing together 12-member teams from the U.S. and Europe for glory and pride on a three-day worldwide stage. The 44th Ryder Cup Matches will be held in Italy from 29 September to 1 October 2023 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio, northeast of Rome. The United States is the holder of the Ryder Cup after its 19–9 victory over Europe in 2021 at Whistling Straits.

Ryder Cup 2023 Captains and Teams:

The captains for the 2023 Ryder Cup are Luke Donald for Europe and Zach Johnson for the U.S. Both are former Ryder Cup players and major champions, with Donald having played in four Ryder Cups (2004, 2006, 2010, and 2012) and Johnson having played in five (2006, 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2016). They will be assisted by their vice captains, who are Thomas Bjørn, Nicolas Colsaerts, José María Olazábal, Edoardo Molinari, and Francesco Molinari for Europe and Jim Furyk, Steve Stricker, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, and Jordan Spieth for the U.S.

The teams will be composed of 12 players each, with six qualifiers from each of the European and World points lists and six captain’s picks for Europe, and six qualifiers from the points rankings and six captain’s picks for the U.S . The team selection process will be finalized by August 2023.

Ryder Cup 2023 Course:

Marco Simone Golf and Country Club is a stadium golf course situated just half an hour’s drive from the Eternal City of Rome. The course lies within 350 acres of stunning Roman countryside, complete with a restored 11th Century castle and the rolling fairways and undulating greens will make for a true test of Europe and USA’s physical and mental skill. The course has been completely renovated to host the 2023 Ryder Cup, with new tees, bunkers, irrigation system, drainage system, and grasses. The course will play as a par-72 layout measuring 7,493 yards from the back tees.

Format and Schedule of Ryder Cup 2023:

The Ryder Cup is a match play event, with each match worth one point. The competition format will be as follows:

  • Day 1 (Friday) – 4 foursome (alternate shot) matches and 4 fourball (better ball) matches
  • Day 2 (Saturday) – 4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches
  • Day 3 (Sunday) – 12 singles matches

On the first two days there are 4 foursome matches and 4 fourball matches with the home captain choosing which are played in the morning and which in the afternoon. With a total of 28 points available, 14½ points are required to win the Cup, and 14 points are required for the defending champion to retain the Cup. All matches are played to a maximum of 18 holes.

  • Friday: Morning Foursomes / Afternoon Fourballs
  • Saturday: Morning Foursomes / Afternoon Fourballs
  • Sunday: Singles Matches / Closing Ceremony

Team Selection of Ryder Cup 2023:

The European team qualification rules were announced on 30 August 2022. There were several changes from the previous Ryder Cup, with three qualifiers from each of the European and World points lists and the number of captain’s picks increased from three to six; the weighting of points was also changed, with highest ranked events now worth 4 times the lowest, having been six times the value previously.

The U.S. team qualification rules were announced on 10 September 2022. There were no changes from the previous Ryder Cup, with six qualifiers from the points rankings based on PGA Tour events from January 1st 2022 to August 27th 2023, including majors; and six captain’s picks selected by Zach Johnson after the conclusion of the BMW Championship on September 3rd 2023.
