MLB Standings 2023: Who’s In, Who’s Out and Who’s Still Fighting for the Playoffs

he 2023 MLB season is nearing its end, and the playoff picture is getting clearer. Here is a brief overview of the standings in each division and the wild card race.

American League

East Division

The Orioles have been the surprise team of the year, as they have clinched the division title for the first time since 2014, with a record of 97-59. They have the best record in the American League, and are on track to secure home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Rays are in second place, with a record of 95-62, and have also clinched a playoff berth as the first wild card team. They have a 9.5-game lead over the third-place Blue Jays, who are still in contention for the second wild card spot, with a record of 87-69. The Blue Jays have a 2-game lead over the fourth-place Mariners, who are their closest rivals in the wild card race. The Yankees and the Red Sox are in fourth and fifth place respectively, and have both been eliminated from playoff contention.

Central Division

The Twins have clinched the division title for the second consecutive year, with a record of 83-73. They have a comfortable lead over the second-place Guardians, who are 9.5 games back with a record of 74-83. The Guardians are also 11.5 games behind the second wild card spot, and have been eliminated from playoff contention. The Tigers are in third place, with a record of 73-83, followed by the White Sox and the Royals, who have both lost more than 90 games this season.

West Division

The Rangers are in first place, with a record of 87-68, and have a chance to clinch the division title soon. They have a 2.5-game lead over the second-place Astros, who are also in contention for the second wild card spot, with a record of 85-71. The Astros are tied with the third-place Mariners, who have a record of 84-71, and are half a game behind the Blue Jays in the wild card race. The Angels and the Athletics are in fourth and fifth place respectively, and have both been eliminated from playoff contention.

National League

Central Division

The Cardinals have clinched the division title for the first time since 2015, with a record of 88-68. They have a comfortable lead over the second-place Brewers, who are 8 games back with a record of 83-73. The Brewers are also 6 games behind the second wild card spot, and have been eliminated from playoff contention. The Cubs are in third place, with a record of 79-77, followed by the Reds and the Pirates, who have both lost more than 90 games this season.

East Division

The Braves have clinched the division title for the fourth consecutive year, with a record of 100-56. They have a comfortable lead over the second-place Mets, who are 10 games back with a record of 84-72. The Mets are also in contention for the second wild card spot, as they are only half a game behind the Phillies, who currently hold that position. The Mets have a half-game lead over the third-place Nationals, who have a record of 84-73. The Marlins and the Phillies are in fourth and fifth place respectively, and have both been eliminated from playoff contention.

West Division

The West Division is the most competitive division in baseball, as four teams are still in contention for the division title and/or the wild card spots. The Dodgers are in first place, with a record of 96-59, but they have not clinched anything yet. They have a one-game lead over the second-place Giants, who have a record of 91-65, and have clinched a playoff berth as one of the wild card teams. The Giants have a one-game lead over the third-place Padres, who have a record of 90-66, and are currently holding the second wild card spot. The Padres have a half-game lead over the fourth-place Rockies, who have a record of 90-67, and are still in contention for both the division title and/or the wild card spot. The Diamondbacks are in fifth place, and have been eliminated from playoff contention.
